What is Airband broadband?
Founded in 2009 by Red and Miranda Peel, Airband's mission is to bring better broadband to people in rural areas.
Airband uses both a fibre broadband and Fixed Wireless network to bring internet to remote and hard-to-reach communities, primarily in the West of England but with some reach eastward.
After initial investment from Amber Infrastructure in 2018, asset management firm abrdn went on to invest over £200 million in Airband, including a £100 million debt facility. In August 2023, abrdn purchased Amber's majority stake in Airband.2

Airband broadband speeds
Use our speed checker to see how well your current broadband is performing.
Airband broadband offers the following speeds with full fibre:
- 150Mbps
- 300Mbps
- 600Mbps
- 900Mbps
With Airband, download and upload speeds are the same across all its fibre packages.
Airband also offers the following speeds with Fixed Wireless:
- 40Mbps (avg. upload speed of 10Mbps)
- 150Mbps (avg. upload speed of 30Mbps)
- 400Mbps (avg. upload speed of 75Mbps)
Airband uses both fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) and fixed wireless (FWA) to help you get online. This means people in rural areas - typically distanced more from telephone exchanges - have a greater chance of getting better connections.
While FTTP broadband enables fast, reliable speeds via a connection that goes all the way into your property, FWA uses radio to send and receive internet signals.
But, FWA requires a direct line of sight to your home, so availability can vary. Also, latency might be higher due to external interference with the radio signals, such as extreme weather conditions.
Airband broadband costs
Airband broadband deals start out with a lower introductory price of between £28 and £38 per month. That could last for 10-20 months, depending on the deal.
After the introductory period is over, you’ll see a fairly significant price hike to between £33 and £58. The new price will stay in place until the end of your 24-month contract.
The description of each deal on the Airband website will tell you how long the introductory rate lasts and what the price goes up to after that.
