What happens when you switch internet providers?

What are the different types of Broadband?

There are several different types of broadband currently available:

Full fibre

Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC)

  • Fibre to the cabinet and copper wires to the home
  • Speeds of up to 76Mbps
  • Available to almost all UK homes

Cable

  • Uses TV cable wiring
  • Average speeds faster than fibre according to Ofcom
  • The main cable broadband provider in the UK is Virgin Media

4G or 5G home broadband

  • Works the same as mobile broadband
  • Comes with a router that you plug into the wall
  • 4G or 5G home broadband tends to be faster and more reliable than mobile broadband

Satellite broadband

Mobile broadband

  • Mobile broadband picks up mobile phone signals and converts it into Wi-Fi
  • Small router you can carry around with you
  • Speeds are dependent on your location

ASDL

  • ADSL is the oldest form of broadband and is being phased out
  • Speeds of up to 24Mbps
  • Actual speeds are closer to 10Mbps

Top tips for comparing broadband deals

There’s plenty to consider when comparing broadband deals, including:

  • Service availability - this is crucial. Use our postcode checker so you’ll only see broadband deals that are actually available in your area.
  • Speed - check out our bandwidth calculator to get an idea of what speed you need
  • Cost - you can filter your search by price and/or sort the results from low to high
  • Contract length - don’t assume it’s always a trade-off between price and flexibility. Sometimes you’ll find a 12-month deal with a cheaper monthly payment than the 24-month offers out there
  • Customer service - you don’t want to be stuck with a broadband provider who responds slowly to problems (although you do have the legal right to leave if things get really bad). See what people are saying about the provider on third-party review sites like Defaqto before you commit
  • Freebies - Sometimes broadband providers offer little extras like free gifts and vouchers to help you make up your mind
  • Bundles/other services - you might save money overall if you combine your broadband deal with another service, like digital TV or a mobile phone plan

What affects your home broadband?

Full fibre is the fastest type, followed by cable and FTTC, with ADSL bringing up the rear.

If you don’t have full fibre or cable, there will be copper wiring connecting your home to the roadside telecoms cabinet. With this type of connection, the physical distance matters

Your router position affects how well the devices in your home pick up a Wi-Fi signal, which means it affects the internet speeds you experience

Other users can also slow things down for you. If other family members are hogging your home’s connection, there’s less bandwidth available for you.

Even if you live alone, you could experience lower speeds at peak times if you’re in an area without a fibre network.

What broadband speed do I need?

Your optimal broadband speed depends on how many people will be sharing your connection and what they’ll be doing online.

How much does broadband cost?

We’ve pulled together the prices paid by Go.Compare broadband customers for different speed categories.

Hidden costs

The low monthly price for 100-249 Mbps broadband in our table may surprise you. This is because the table only compares headline prices - the advertised price that you pay at the start of the contract. During your contract, monthly payments can go up in two ways.

  • There may be a mid-contract price rise . This is a fixed price increase, usually in line with inflation.
  • Some providers offer a deep discount at the start, perhaps for the first six months, then hike up prices when the promotional period ends. With this kind of deal, prices could double after six months or so. Therefore, make sure you look at the total contract price as well as the monthly cost.

All this information will be in the terms and conditions. So before you commit, think about the price you’ll pay over the duration of the contract rather than just the initial monthly cost..

Broadband deals with vouchers & special offers

Here at Go.Compare, many of our broadband providers offer extra incentives to make their deals even better. Depending on the deal you choose, you could get:

  • A gift card worth up to £150
  • Bill credit applied to your account
  • A free router upgrade or Wi-Fi booster
  • A cashback offer

To find these offers, you can use our filters to see deals that come with a free gift. Or you can look out for deals on our site that are labelled as “Special offer” or “Reward” in our comparison table.

Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily. The advertised top speeds have to be achievable, but they don’t have to be available 24/7. Older networks will be slower at peak times.

If your provider has signed up to the Ofcom code of practice on residential broadband speeds, you will get realistic information about likely speeds and a minimum speed guarantee. But this code of practice is voluntary, so not all providers sign up to it. There’s more information on the Ofcom website.

The best time to switch is when you’re outside the minimum term of your contract, so you won’t have to pay any exit fees.

So the ideal time to start comparing new broadband deals is about 30 days before your contract term ends.

Switching providers is easier than ever before, now that regulator Ofcom has brought in a measure called One Touch Switch.

As of September 2024, you don’t have to tell your current provider when you want to switch as your new provider will do it for you. Your old and new provider will then coordinate with each other to ensure a seamless switch. There should be no gap in your broadband provision and no overlap period where you’re paying two providers.

Use our postcode checker to find out what broadband deals are available where you live.

No. Full fibre and cable broadband deals don’t need a phone line to work.

Part-fibre and older-style ADSL connections need a phone line to work but that doesn’t mean you have to sign up to a landline phone plan. It can work out cheaper to get a landline included but the days when it was compulsory are over.
