If you’re planning a move to or already live in the Granite City, and wondering what your broadband options are, there’s good news. The city of Aberdeen has the highest level of full fibre broadband coverage in Scotland. On average, 90% of UK homes and businesses have access to full fibre.[2] Virgin Media’s cable network doesn’t cover Aberdeen.

The actual speeds available to you depend on a number of different factors.

Who are the top internet providers in Aberdeen?

All the major UK broadband providers serve Aberdeen, so you have plenty of choice. As of May 2025, Go.Compare has trusted providers on our panel for the UK as a whole. With the exception of Virgin Media and a few local altnets with limited geographical reach, all of them cover Aberdeen. Use our postcode search to see all the deals available for your area. Here are a few to consider.

BT Broadband

BT Broadband offers a wide range of deals to Aberdeen customers. If your part of Aberdeen doesn't have full fibre yet, BT's hybrid fibre speeds range from 36Mbps to 73Mbps. As of April 2025 it only costs a pound or so more for BT's hybrid customers to go up a speed category and we'd recommend you do so.

If you're in a blazing-fast full fibre area of Aberdeen, BT can offer speeds up to 900Mbps.

Vodafone Broadband

Out of all the broadband providers covering Aberdeen, Vodafone wins on speed. Like most providers, it uses the BT Openreach infrastructure.

Zen Internet

Zen Internet is one of the few providers using CityFibre’s network rather than relying on Openreach. Their top speed in Aberdeen is an impressive 910Mbps. They’re a good option if you’re specifically looking for an 18-month contract.

Sky and NOW Broadband

Sky and its subsidiary NOW Broadband both cover Aberdeen. The range of deals available includes some digital TV packages.

Can I get full fibre in Aberdeen?

As with other parts of Scotland, there’s an urban/rural divide. You’ve read that Aberdeen City has 90% full fibre coverage. Infrastructure provider CityFibre announced in February 2025 that it had completed the primary build of its network in Aberdeen.

The surrounding county of Aberdeenshire isn’t so well connected. Aberdeenshire Council is working with the Scottish government on its 'Reaching 100%' (R100) project, which aims to get every home and business on a broadband connection of at least 30Mbps. In 2022 it set a five-year target to cover 16,000 more properties.

The UK government has also identified that rural Aberdeenshire has poor connectivity and made it a target area for Project Gigabit.

What’s the fastest broadband available?

Some parts of Aberdeen have access to gigabit broadband, currently the fastest possible speed category. If you want speeds in this category, you’ll probably have to go with Vodafone. Go just below the 1,000Mbps mark - which is still incredibly fast - and there’s a lot more choice.

At the other end of the scale, some areas are still on slower hybrid fibre or even ADSL connections. You can see the fastest speeds available to you by putting your postcode into our address checker. We’ll only display broadband packages that work for your address. Then you can sort by speed as well as price.

Does Aberdeen have 5G broadband?

The Signalchecker website rates Aberdeen City second for mobile coverage in the whole of the UK, so 5G home broadband is definitely an option.

As with fixed-line internet, there’s a big difference between the city experience and rural broadband. Aberdeenshire is in the top ten worst places in Scotland for mobile connectivity and many areas don’t even have a reliable 4G connection. Aberdeenshire Council is working with the UK and Scottish governments to improve this.

What are the broadband speeds in Aberdeen?

Despite the high level of full fibre coverage in the Granite City, average internet speeds in Aberdeen are actually below the norm for the UK. The Fair Internet Report finds that the median download speed in Aberdeen is 56Mbps.[3] That’s well below the UK median of 72Mbps. We predict this will rise as more homes and businesses get connected to the fibre networks available.

The Kittybrewster area boasts the fastest connection speeds in Aberdeen City, but it’s still a tiny bit on the slow side compared to the UK as a whole.

What broadband speed do I need?

If you’re a thrifty Aberdonian, you don’t want to pay extra for internet bandwidth you won’t use. You also don’t want a connection that’s too slow for what you’re doing. We’ve created a quick calculator to help you work out what broadband speed you need, so take thirty seconds to put your details in.

How to get the cheapest broadband in Aberdeen?

Aberdeen is well served for broadband providers, so you have plenty of choice. If you compare your options with us, you can sort the results by price, so it’s easy to find the cheapest deal on our panel.

As well as price, you should think about:

  • Choosing the right speed category for your needs
  • Reliability and customer service - how does the provider fare on third-party review sites?
  • Contract length - many providers offer 24 months, but there are many 12-month broadband contracts out there too

How to switch broadband

Switching broadband providers is now the same process as signing up for a new deal, so you don’t need to tell your old provider you’re leaving. That’s thanks to a new process called One Touch Switch that applies to all fixed-line broadband contracts.

Can I leave my broadband contract early?

You can, but your existing provider will probably charge you a fee for leaving before the end date of your contract. Our guide to your broadband cancellation rights explains more.
