As the largest city in Yorkshire, Leeds has recently undergone improvements to its broadband infrastructure.

In June 2023, the Superfast West Yorkshire and York Broadband programme concluded, bringing gigabit-capable speeds to Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region.[2] Thanks to this upgrade, Leeds now offers faster broadband deals with better connectivity.

What types of broadband can I get in Leeds?

There are two main types of broadband available in Leeds:

Full fibre

This is the most common type of broadband in Leeds, with recent data showing coverage at 90.26%.[3]

Full fibre broadband, also known as fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP), uses fibre optic cables to connect directly to homes and businesses. Unlike hybrid fibre, it doesn’t rely on copper wiring, making connectivity faster and more reliable.

As the latest broadband technology, full fibre can deliver gigabit-capable speeds. This means some providers offer connections of up to 1Gbps subject to availability and network coverage.

Hybrid fibre

Hybrid fibre means that your local roadside cabinet has a fibre connection, but this doesn’t extend all the way to your house. It’s slower than full fibre but a lot faster than the older-style ADSL lines. You’ll get speeds of at least 30Mbps, which puts hybrid fibre in the “superfast” category.[4] Almost every property in Leeds has access to 30Mbps+ speeds (98.7%, to be exact)[3] but most of these have full fibre, so we estimate that less than 10% of Leeds homes are still on a hybrid fibre connection.

Hybrid fibre is still capable of supporting activities like:

However, hybrid might struggle with maintaining a strong connection for multiple devices at the same time. For larger households, HMOs, or student accommodation, speeds of 100Mbps or higher are ideal and for that you need full fibre (or cable - see below).
