How do I compare which internet is best in my area?

All you need to do is enter your address and current broadband provider into our tool at the top of the page and you’ll see a range of competitive broadband plans that are available where you are. To find what you’re looking for, use our handy filter to show the results that suit your needs. The best broadband in your area will be the one that gives you everything you need at a great price.

You can filter by:

  • Speed - Is it fast enough for your internet needs? For example, if you’re a gamer, you might need a superfast connection

  • TV channels - Select which channels you want access to with your broadband package

How do I know which internet provider is the best in my area?

As well as the broadband package having all the features you’re looking for, it’s important to make sure the provider is right for you.

You can:

  • Check customer reviews from independent sites like Trustpilot
  • Engage with online community groups to see what experiences other customers have had with the provider
  • Find out how the provider deals with reported broadband outages and how quickly it sorts them
  • Check if there are any plans to upgrade the broadband in your area
  • Investigate what the provider’s complaints procedure is
  • Find out whether or not there are exit fees if you’re unhappy with the service and want to leave your contract

Why does broadband availability differ by area?

Broadband speeds can vary between postcodes. They can even differ between different homes on the same street.

Factors that might affect broadband speed include:

  • Your property type
  • How far you live from your telephone exchange
  • What router you have
  • Local infrastructure

For activities like online gaming and streaming, ultrafast and gigabit-capable broadband are both good choices, especially if multiple people in your household do these kinds of things at the same time.

You’ll need to check your eligibility first, as some properties and areas don't support ultrafast or gigabit-capable broadband just yet.

To see if you can get ultrafast broadband where you’re based, use our postcode checker.

UK broadband coverage explained

Although no broadband provider covers the whole of the UK, you should be able to find one that can connect you to the internet.

Offering broadband to 99% of the UK, BT utilises its Openreach network to support various cabled connections, including standard and fibre. It also claims to be building 62,000 full fibre connections every week.

Similar Openreach-backed networks include:

Virgin Media is making improvements to its own independent network as well, with gigabit-capable services available. Its Gig1 broadband actually has average download speeds of up to 1,130 megabits per second (Mbps).

Some providers, like Hyperoptic, only service certain areas, while others specialise in remote or more localised communities.

For example, Fibrus covers north-west England and Northern Ireland, whereas Trooli offers full fibre broadband in rural South East England.

Do broadband speeds vary depending on area?

Yes. The distance between your home and the nearest telephone exchange can result in slower broadband speeds, as the signal has further to travel.

Fibre is the fastest type of broadband available right now, capable of delivering smoother downloads and higher connectivity.

However, it’s important to note that full fibre is typically much faster than FTTC, which still uses old copper telephone lines to provide internet access.

If the broadband speeds in your area aren’t fast enough for your needs, it's worth considering cableless alternatives like satellite or mobile broadband.

Why is broadband slow in my area?

As a rule, the more rural and remote your home is, the slower your internet speeds.

So, it’s worth seeing if there are plans to bring high-speed broadband to your area in the future.

Many providers have also begun to offer rural broadband with decent speeds for those living in harder-to-reach communities.

What broadband speeds can I get?

Use our broadband speed test for an idea of how fast your current home internet is.

According to the latest key findings by Ofcom, at the end of 2025, 88% of UK households now have access to gigabit-capable broadband. And full fibre is available to 79% UK homes.

Not all customers need to pay for the fastest internet speeds available to them. In fact, our research suggests that a third of users are overpaying on their broadband bills. So if you don’t need a fast connection for things like uploads and streaming, you could save money by opting for a more modest package.

Remember that you might not receive the advertised speeds on your broadband contract. Watch out for the use of ‘up to’ whenever broadband speed is mentioned. Average speeds will give you a much more realistic idea of the speeds you’re likely to get.

What's the cheapest broadband in my area?

If you don't need top speeds, choosing an ADSL broadband connection could save you money.

ADSL packages are sometimes cheaper than fibre connections, as they’re slightly slower. That said, they're only really suitable if you live alone or with one other person and you both use the internet sparingly. Otherwise, you might start to experience lag and other problems with slow internet speeds.

As fibre internet has now become the norm throughout the UK, you might also find that switching to an ADSL connection is not as cost-effective or hassle-free as getting a cheap fibre deal.

Use our postcode checker to compare the best broadband in your area and get a clearer picture of how much you can save.

Can I get fibre broadband in my area?

You can use our fibre broadband checker to see if it's available in your area.

Fibre broadband availability depends on your postcode, and there’s more than one type to consider:

  • Full fibre
  • FTTC (also known as superfast broadband)
  • Virgin Media’s cable network

According to Ofcom’s latest data, the UK’s full fibre coverage is now up to 79%.

At the same time, it states that only 0.1% of all UK households can’t access decent broadband.

This means you’re more likely to find a fibre broadband where you live than any other type of connection.

But if you live in a more rural area and you can’t get fibre internet, cableless alternatives like mobile or satellite broadband are worth considering.

How much does broadband cost in the UK?

Our research suggests that most UK broadband customers spend between £25 and £29 per month on their broadband. But the cost of broadband varies depending on:

  • The type of connection you have
  • How long your contract is
  • Your provider’s terms and conditions
  • Any installation or set-up costs

Currently, most superfast fibre broadband plans tend to cost roughly the same as standard ADSL tariffs.

Fibre broadband prices do start to rise with faster speeds and extras, including:

  • Home phones
  • Digital TV packages
  • International calling

Can I get a better deal for the same price I’m paying now?

Yes, it’s entirely possible to find a better broadband contract for the same price as your current one.

Providers tend to offer their best deals to new customers. So if you’ve been with the same supplier for years, the chances are you could be getting more for your money elsewhere.

And if you’re not out of contract yet, look out for deals where the new broadband provider will pay off the exit fee if you switch.

Is broadband available everywhere?

You should be able to access some sort of broadband from pretty much everywhere in the UK. The type that’s available to you will depend on where you live.

According to the latest Ofcom figures, 57,000 premises in the UK are currently unable to access decent broadband (more than 10 Mbps download speed). This is the case for places like Argyll and Bute and Orkney. If you live in a remote area, satellite broadband could help you get online.

Accessing superfast broadband is standard in cities and suburban areas of the UK, so you’ll have a much wider range of providers to choose from.
