BT is the world’s oldest communications company, tracing its origins back to the Electric Telegraph Company in 1846. It had the monopoly on telecoms supply in the UK for many years and is still the UK’s biggest landline and broadband provider today.

BT offers a wide range of broadband plans and TV packages. In 2016, the BT Group acquired competitor EE and is now using the EE brand to market its flagship consumer products.

Benefits of BT broadband packages

  • The Stay Fast Guarantee is a promise that your speed will stay above a stated minimum, or you get £20 back[1]
  • The Complete WiFi add-on offers a £100 bill credit if you can’t get a reliable WiFi connection in all parts of your home[2]
  • BT’s call centres are all based in the UK and Ireland
  • If your home isn’t yet on full fibre and you choose BT broadband, they’ll give you a free upgrade to fibre as soon as it’s available in your area
  • The BT Halo add-on gives you free tech support, seven days a week

What BT broadband speeds can I expect?

If you’re on full fibre, there’s a range of speeds available from BT Broadband. It’s usually a trade-off between speed and price, so work out what broadband speed you need before you start comparing.

  • Fibre Essential deals are at the low end of superfast - 36Mbps (which is pretty slow by 2025 standards)
  • Fibre 1 and Fibre 2 packages offer 50Mbps and 74Mbps respectively
  • Full Fibre options take you over 150Mbps
  • The top speed is 900Mbps - not quite gigabit broadband, but very close

If your home doesn’t have a full fibre connection, BT has a few hybrid fibre deals available. The maximum possible speed offered is 73Mbps.

For the minority still on ADSL broadband, the top speeds will be around 11Mbps but it’s time to see if you can upgrade to hybrid or full fibre. Our postcode checker gives an up-to-date view of what’s available for you.

BT deals: Phone, TV and broadband packages

Your choice of BT broadband package depends on:

  • What speed you need
  • Whether you need extras like TV channels or a landline
  • Your budget

BT landline and phone deals

The way we use landlines in the UK is changing and the BT Group is leading the change. BT Openreach is deactivating the old network of copper telephone cables and replacing it with an internet phone service called Digital Voice. When you change or upgrade your landline deal, BT will move you to the new service.

For combined BT broadband and landline deals, the landline service is treated as an add-on to the broadband package. There are two options for the landline component:

  • Pay As You Go - All calls to UK landlines and mobile at the same price per minute, whatever time of day it is
  • Unlimited Minutes - All calls you make to UK landlines or mobiles covered by the monthly payment

If you make a lot of international calls, there are two optional extras:

  • Friends & Family International (cheap rates)
  • International Freedom (inclusive calls to some places, cheap rates for others)

BT also offers landline-only deals for people who want a home phone but don’t want BT broadband. You get the same two options as with the landline component of a bundled deal, Pay As You Go or Unlimited Minutes. At £30.20 for PAYG and £48.20 for Unlimited, it’s more expensive to get BT phone service separately from your broadband, compared to combining the two.[3]

If you want a landline but don’t want any kind of internet service, you might be eligible for a discounted home phone service from BT. Call 0800 587 0083 to find out if you qualify.

BT TV packages

BT’s TV offering now comes under the EE brand. There are five EE TV packages:

  • Entertainment
  • Sport
  • Big Entertainment
  • Big Sport
  • Full Works

If you’re already a BT Broadband customer you can easily add an EE TV package to your plan. The cheapest is Sport at £23 a month and the priciest is Full Works at £80 a month (plus a £10 activation fee).[4]

What else is included in BT broadband plans?

There’s lots of security features included as standard with BT broadband plans.

  • Virus protection from NortonTM
  • BT Web Protect to warn you about potentially harmful websites
  • Parental controls to help keep your child safe online

What BT broadband deals are available to new customers?

Sometimes BT has broadband offers that are exclusively available to new customers. But the telecoms giant isn’t just interested in attracting newbies. Sometimes existing customers get personalised deals and other perks for loyalty. When you’re browsing for deals on Go.Compare, select your existing provider from the dropdown menu. Then you’ll only see the results that are relevant to you.

How long are BT broadband contracts?

Most BT contracts are for 24 months, but they usually have a few 12-month deals. As you’d expect, you’ll pay more per month with a 12-month contract.

If you’re looking for a shorter deal, you won’t find it with BT. They don’t offer one-month rolling contracts to new customers. Instead, check out the short-term broadband deals from other providers on our panel.

How do I get BT broadband?

This page has all the BT broadband deals available through Go.Compare.

  • Put your postcode into the address checker, you can see what’s available for your home
  • Sort by price and speed to find the right deal for you
  • Click on “Get deal” to go to BT’s website and finish signing up

You can also browse deals directly on the BT website.

How do I get BT broadband if I’m moving house?

If you’re already a BT Broadband customer and you want to move house but stay on the same contract, there’s an established process to follow.

  • Log in to your BT account
  • Give them your new address and moving date
  • Bring your existing router to plug in on move day

They ask for two weeks’ notice, but you might be able to get your new connection sorted sooner than that.

Usually BT won’t charge you if you’re moving house and staying on the same deal as a BT Broadband customer. The only exception would be if you’re still on a landline-only package or a copper broadband package and there is no existing line to your new home.

How do I switch to BT broadband?

Since 2024, switching to a different fixed broadband provider is a pretty simple process. An Ofcom system called One Touch Switch means you just have to sign up with the new provider and they’ll handle the whole process, including telling your existing provider that you’re leaving. You can switch to BT broadband through Go.Compare or by visiting the BT website directly.

Can I switch to BT Broadband for free?

It depends whether you’re still in contract with your existing provider. If the fixed term of your contract is over, you’re free to switch to BT Broadband or any other provider.

Some people believe if you don’t move fast enough once your broadband contract ends, you’ll be stuck in a renewed contract with the same provider for another year or more. That’s not true. At the end of a fixed-term broadband contract, most providers move you to a rolling deal where you have to give 30 days' notice to leave. And you don’t even have to contact your existing provider to give notice - One Touch Switch means the new provider will do it for you.

If you’re still in contract with a different provider, then you’ll probably have to pay an exit fee to switch to BT Broadband. Check out our guide to your broadband cancellation rights for more information.

FAQs

How long does BT broadband take to set up?

Almost every broadband provider in the UK uses the same infrastructure, built by BT Openreach. So when you switch between them, there’s no change in the actual cables your internet connection comes from. (The only exception would be if you’re moving from Virgin Media cable broadband or from a local altnet.) It still usually takes about a fortnight to switch providers, mainly for administrative rather than technical reasons.

If you’re upgrading from hybrid fibre or ADSL to full fibre, you’ll need an engineer to install your fibre connection. This appointment will usually add another week or more to your set-up time.

How much is BT broadband only for pensioners?

BT doesn’t offer any deals specially aimed at pensioners, but if you’re on Pension Credit then you can apply for their cheaper House Essentials tariff. If you're already a BT customer, ring 0800 800 150 to get started with applying.

If you’re upgrading from hybrid fibre or ADSL to full fibre, you’ll need an engineer to install your fibre connection. This appointment will usually add another week or more to your set-up time.

What is the cheapest way to get BT WiFi?

Our results page lets you sort BT broadband tariffs by price. As of April 2025, there are a few deals on the panel where you pay nothing for the first three months.[5] When you're comparing your options, make sure you look at the total price for the whole term of the contract.

What routers come with BT Broadband?

If you’re getting a new BT broadband plan, you’ll get the Smart Hub 2. That’s the latest model, but many BT Broadband customers are still using older routers. If that’s you, it’s worth checking whether or not your original contract has expired. If so, it’s time to compare new broadband deals and see if you can get better hardware or more bandwidth for your money.

Does BT offer a social tariff for broadband?

Yes, BT offers a social tariff called BT Home Essentials. It’s for new or existing customers who receive specific benefits, including Universal Credit and Pension Credit. You’ll need to provide your National Insurance number to prove that you’re eligible. The BT Home Essentials contract runs for 12 months, then they’ll run another eligibility check to make sure you still qualify.
