What’s included with TV and broadband deals?

The monthly price quoted always includes:

• The broadband service
• Whatever TV channels are specified in the deal
• The tech needed to make it work - router, set-top box etc

Some providers offer installation as part of the package, some will charge for it as an extra.

Virgin Media gives new customers the option of installing their own digital TV package using a kit that they ship to you. Otherwise, it’s £30 for an engineer visit.

How to choose the best TV and broadband deal for you

When comparing TV and broadband deals, think about:

Broadband speed

You need plenty of bandwidth for digital TV, so most providers only offer combined TV and broadband deals where there’s a full fibre or cable connection. This means high speeds as standard.

But if you’re a house of heavy internet users, you may need very high speeds. Use our bandwidth calculator to find out your recommended broadband speed.

TV Channel types

Most people have a few specific must-watch channels in mind when they’re choosing a broadband and TV package. Sometimes it works out cheaper to go for a basic package that doesn’t include your favourites, then buy them as an add-on. But sometimes the cheapest option is a bigger package that includes it all as standard.

In most cases, bundling broadband and TV together is cheaper than buying separate products.

However, if you don’t watch a lot of TV, you might save more by comparing cheap broadband plans and signing up to streaming services separately.

Can I get broadband and tv without a landline?

There’s no need to have a landline to get a broadband and TV deal. The UK is retiring its old phone lines and what we think of as a landline is becoming a thing of the past. (It’ll still be possible to have a phone at home, but it’ll connect to a digital network.)

Your digital TV and broadband service might be delivered through the fibre network. Or it could be on Virgin’s independent cable network. Our postcode finder will show you the broadband deals available in your area. But either way, a landline is not required.

What are the different types of digital TV?

• Freeview is the UK’s only digital terrestrial TV service,² which means it’s the only digital TV package that requires an aerial to work
• Streaming TV platforms like Netflix or Apple TV+ are accessed through your normal broadband connection
• Cable TV is only offered by Virgin Media in the UK. They deliver the TV channels through the same cables they use for a cable broadband connection
• Satellite TV uses signals bounced off communication satellites to deliver digital channels via a dish fixed to your house, but provider Sky is moving away from this

Which broadband providers offer TV?

A lot of broadband providers offer TV channels, either separately from their main broadband offering or as a bundle.

Sky has two main TV packages: Sky Essential and Sky Ultimate. You can add extras like Sky Sports or Sky Cinema. Sky may be famous for satellite TV but it’s moving away from this towards TV channels delivered via your broadband connection.

Sky Glass is a 4K smart, streaming TV and Sky Stream is the cheaper streaming-only option.

NOW TV is owned by Sky, but started life as a separate brand for viewers who don’t want a full subscription package.³ NOW Broadband followed a few years later.⁴

Last year the NOW brand relaunched as “powered by Sky”⁵, but it still caters for people who don’t want a Sky-sized subscription by offering NOW TV passes. You can buy a month’s telly for just £9.99, with no obligation to renew. Or pay £6.99/month if you’re prepared to commit for six months.⁶

BT TV has been rebranded as EE and you can only get EE TV as part of a package together with BT Broadband. There are five TV packages: Entertainment, Sport, Big Entertainment, Big Sport and Full Works.⁷

TalkTalk TV is only available with TalkTalk broadband, so a combined TV and broadband deal is your only option.⁸ The TV part of the deal starts at £5/month and you’ll get all the Freeview channels included.

Virgin Media also only offers TV channels in combination with its broadband service. There are six different packages at the time of writing, of which four include Sky Sports.

Vodafone is another provider that only offers TV with its broadband packages. At the time of writing, the deal is that when you subscribe to Vodafone Xtra Broadband, you get an Apple TV 4K (worth £149) and a three-month subscription to Apple TV.⁹

Are TV and broadband deals cheaper?

Any given TV and broadband package is likely to be cheaper than buying the exact same broadband speed and the exact same channels separately.

But it’s not necessarily the cheapest possible option. It’s easy to overspend by going for a deal that includes lots of extras you’ll never use.

How do I save on the cost of watching TV?

• Use a site like ours to compare the options and sort by price
• Be prepared to compromise on the channels you subscribe to - which ones are essential and which are just nice to have?
• If you already have a TV and broadband package but you’re out of contract, try contacting your provider and using the threat of leaving to haggle for a cheaper deal.
• Start with a low-commitment package like a NOW TV monthly pass (see above) so you have the choice of upgrading to something more long-term or cancelling without having to give too much notice

Check if you need a TV licence

If you never watch live television and never catch up on BBC programmes using iPlayer, you can get away with cancelling your TV licence and saving £169.50 a year. But this really does mean never watching any live telly, including on digital channels. Trying to fudge it could land you with a fine that’s bigger than any potential savings.

Choose ad-supported streaming plans

If your paid-for TV watching is mostly centred on streaming services, check to see if you can switch to a cheaper ad-supported plan with any of these. For example, you could switch from Netflix Standard (£10.99/month) to Netflix Standard with adverts (£4.99/month)¹⁰ from Disney+ Standard (£8.99/month) to Disney+ Standard with ads (£4.99/month)

Switching to a new broadband and TV package

Check that you’re not still tied into an existing contract for either broadband or TV before you start shopping around.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get streaming services with TV and broadband deals?

Some TV and broadband deals only offer their TV channels through streaming; for example, NOW TV and Sky Stream.

If you’re looking for the channels we traditionally think of as “streaming” - such as Netflix - the popular ones are usually available as part of a variety of TV and broadband deals. For example, you can get Apple TV+ on Sky Glass and Sky Stream¹¹ as well as through Vodafone’s deal.

Can I get separate TV and broadband?

Most broadband companies with a TV offering treat it as an add-on to their broadband service, so it’s not available separately.

• EE TV: only available with BT Broadband
• TalkTalk TV: only available with TalkTalk broadband
• Virgin Media TV services: only available with Virgin broadband
• Vodafone: a deal with Apple TV that’s only accessible to Vodafone broadband customers

Two notable exceptions, however, are Sky and NOW Broadband.

You don’t need to be a broadband customer to enjoy Sky TV or NOW TV. Their plans are available as standalone services no matter who your home internet provider is.

What is the average TV and internet bill per month?

Customers buying combined broadband and TV deals through Go.Compare last year paid an average of £46.53 per month at the start of their contract.¹²

The actual price you’ll pay depends on a number of factors, including:

• The broadband speed you choose
• The package you choose
• The cost of any extras, like additional channels

The monthly price usually goes up at some point during the contract. This will be stated in the terms and conditions, so do check how much the increase will be before signing.

How are TV and broadband deals installed?

It depends on the provider you choose. For TV services that are streamed through your home internet connection, like NOW TV or Netflix, you just need to log in to your online account.

For services using a set-top box, you’ll need to plug it in, follow the on-screen set-up instructions and possibly get in touch with tech support if problems arise.

The days of getting a new satellite dish installed to watch Sky TV are now over. The communication satellites that Sky uses are coming to the end of their life, so Sky is moving to other ways of delivering their TV channels to your home. If you already have a satellite dish it will still work, but if you’re a new Sky customer you can choose between Sky Glass (using a smart TV ) and Sky Stream (using a streaming box). Both use your home internet connection.
