Internet deals with free gifts explained

When searching for broadband deals, you may find yourself swayed by the free gifts on offer for signing up.

However, there’s more you need to consider before switching broadband provider. It’s important to make sure that the package fulfils your internet requirements, at a price that suits your budget.

Key points

  • Broadband providers may offer incentives, like shopping vouchers or gadgets
  • Always read the small print before making any decisions and weigh up the pros and cons
  • Claiming your free gift can normally be done through your online account

How do I find broadband deals with free gifts?

Put your postcode into the address checker on this page and we'll filter your results for broadband deals with free gifts only.

Free gifts with your broadband are a fun bonus, not the deciding factor in which deal to go for. When you're comparing deals we'd always suggest you also look at speed, monthly price, contract length and the provider's reputation.

What sort of free gifts can I get with broadband?

Providers offer a range of free gifts to entice customers.

Gift cards

Gift cards are the most common free gift you'll get with a broadband package. They're almost always in the form of an electronic voucher that you'll have to claim before spending. Providers offer gift cards that are redeemable at a wide range of retailers, so you have lots of options.

These can be physical paper vouchers that you use in-store, or e-vouchers.

Cashback

Cashback can be seen as a discount on the broadband cost, as you don’t pay the full advertised price. The money is usually added as a credit on your bill.

Routers

Most broadband providers include a free router or ‘hub’ with your package, so we wouldn't really call it a free gift. Networks will sometimes make deals more attractive by offering a more powerful router than the standard one you would normally receive.

Gadgets

While offering gadgets with your broadband deal is not as common anymore, some providers could try to sway you by offering a free games console, laptop, TV, tablet or speaker when you sign up.

These are rare, but definitely worth keeping an eye out for.

Prepaid cards

Prepaid cards, also known as broadband reward cards, are essentially credit cards that are already loaded with a set sum of money. Most retailers accept them.

How do I claim my free gift?

Every provider has a slightly different process for unlocking your free gift, so you really do need to read the terms and conditions before you sign up. Whichever provider you choose, here are a few things to be aware of.

You won't get the freebie straight away. All providers need to wait until your broadband service has been up and running for a while. That's to make sure that:

  • You won't cancel within the 14-day cooling off period
  • You're happy with the service
  • There's no issue with your payments

For many providers, this means waiting until you've had two full months of service. It's common for it to take even longer than this. As of June 2025, the T&Cs for both Sky and Vodafone say that you should allow up to 120 days to receive your gift card. Rebel Broadband beats them both by requiring you to be an active customer for six whole months after your service activates.

Mark the end of the waiting period in your calendar. A lot can happen in a few months and it's easy to forget, so make a note of the latest possible date that you should be hearing about your gift. If you've had nothing by then, chase them.

There'll be an extra step - don't skip it! You might assume you'll get the voucher itself once the waiting period is up. In reality, the next communication you get about the voucher will require you to do something to claim it. Exactly what you have to do will vary from provider to provider - follow the instructions carefully.

Move (fairly) quickly. There will be a deadline for you to follow the instructions and claim your voucher. Usually they allow between 60 and 90 days. If you don't do that extra admin task before the deadline, you don't get the gift. So get it sorted as soon as possible!

It's really easy to make the mistake of assuming that the code you get with the message about claiming your voucher is your voucher to spend at your leisure. It's not! So don't forget to claim the actual voucher and actually benefit from the freebie.

Which broadband providers offer the best free gifts?

It's hard to single out one specific provider - they're all vying for your custom and the tempting offers change all the time. You'll usually see a mix of:

  • Gift cards
  • Broadband reward cards
  • Cashback/bill credit offers

The trick is to start by narrowing down your search results to the broadband deals that meet your needs and budget. Then it's easy to compare based on the monetary value of the incentives on offer.

It's also worth looking at where you can spend your freebie voucher.

Broadband reward cards work like a prepaid debit card and can be spent in most places, although some may be for online use only.

Gift cards usually have to be spent in one specific shop, and you'll usually get a selection to choose from. For example, as of June 2025, Sky is offering new customers a choice between:[2]

  • Tesco
  • M&S
  • The Sainsbury's group (including Argos, Habitat and Tu)
  • John Lewis
  • Currys

What types of freebies are currently available?

To get an idea of your options, we ran a search of our panel in June 2025 to see what was on offer at the low end of the 100Mbps+ range. To keep it simple, we stuck to 24-month deals.

  • Fibre Start is offering a £100 gift card with 100Mbps broadband
  • Rebel is offering a £60 gift card with 109Mbps broadband
  • BT is offering a £50 reward card with 150Mbps broadband
  • Cuckoo is offering a £40 gift card with 150Mbps broadband

The quirkiest free gift currently available through us comes from Earth Broadband. They're promising to plant 144 trees when you sign up for their Sapling deal at 115Mbps. Definitely a freebie with a difference, even if it's not the kind of gift you can put in your pocket.

Obviously that's just a small snapshot of what's available for one speed category at a specific moment in time. We'd always suggest you run a fresh search to see what's available for your address right now.

Should you pick cheaper broadband over a good free gift?

When you're comparing two very similar deals where one's cheaper but the other has a free gift, it's worth doing the sums. Calculate the savings you'd make over the whole term of the contract if you go with the cheaper deal. Don't forget to factor in mid-contract price hikes. Then work out if these savings are less or more than the monetary value of the free gift.

Here's an example.

You're comparing broadband deals in July 2025 and expect to get your broadband up and running in August.

Deal A is advertised as costing £28 a month, while Deal B costs £32 a month and comes with an £80 shopping voucher.

Both deals are 24-month contracts. Deal A rises to £32 a month in March 2026 and Deal B goes up to £35.

In March 2027 they go up to £35 and £37 respectively.

You'd calculate it like this:

Deal A Deal B
Up to March 2026 £28/month for seven months = £196 £32/month for seven months = £224
From March 2026 to March 2027 £32/month for 12 months = £384 £35/month for 12 months = £420
From March 2027 to the end of the fixed term in August 2027 £35/month for five months = £175 £37/month for five months = £185
Total cost over the whole 24-month contract £755 £829

In this example, Deal B (the one with the free gift) will cost you £74 more than Deal A over the whole term of the deal. Since Deal B comes with a shopping voucher worth £80, it's slightly better value - assuming that:

  • Everything else about the two deals is pretty much the same
  • You remember to redeem your voucher
  • You manage to spend it in full before it expires

When you're trying to decide if it's worth getting a broadband deal with a free gift, doing the sums like this should make it a lot clearer.

Things to consider

Purchasing broadband with free perks may seem like a good idea, but there are a few things you should consider before deciding on a provider.

Read the small print

Free money or gifts can be tempting. Just make sure to read the small print before signing up to anything. Don't just look at the initial monthly payment - most deals come with mid-contract price rises so you need to calculate the total cost over the life of the deal. Luckily, our site makes it easy to compare that way.

Offers come and go

Broadband offers with free gifts tend to be around for a fairly short time - often just a few weeks. Make up your mind before the expiry date or you'll miss out.

Contract length

Having said that, don't let FOMO push you into a deal that isn't right for you. You could be stuck with your broadband contract for as long as 24 months, so make sure you're happy to commit for the whole term.

Pros and cons of broadband deals with free gifts

Pros - The biggest selling point of broadband deals with free gifts is that you get something extra out of the deal. You have to renew your broadband contract anyway, so why not get a useful gadget or a voucher to spend on something you fancy?

With vouchers, e-cards and broadband reward cards, you usually get plenty of choice about where you spend them and what you spend them on. Signing up for a new broadband service could pay for anything from your weekly grocery shop to a new pair of jeans.

Cons - The main downside of broadband deals with free gifts is that freebies are a distraction when you're trying to choose the right package. Focus on the important stuff first: the speed, the price and the contract length. Do the sums to make sure you're still getting value for money.

The second drawback is how long it takes to actually get the gift.

This is partly because the provider needs to make sure that you're definitely going ahead with your new broadband service. As with any consumer contract, your broadband contract will have a 14-day 'cooling-off period' during which you can cancel without penalty. So your provider has to wait for the fortnight to be over before they can send out any rewards associated with your deal.

In practice, they will wait longer than this anyway because they want to make sure that the arrangement is going to plan on both sides. They need to check that:

  • Your broadband service has been installed and is working
  • You haven't made any complaints about the reliability or speed
  • The direct debit details you gave are working and the first automatic payment has gone out

That's at least 30 days on top of the time it takes to activate the service. Many prefer to wait two months. Combine this waiting period with the extra admin of using a third-party gift card provider, and you can see why many broadband companies take months to cough up the reward.

FAQs

Will I get a free WiFi router with my broadband?

Usually. Most providers include the WiFi router (also known as a hub) in the cost of the service, so you don't have to pay extra for it. Some providers do charge for the router, especially with short-term and no-contract broadband deals.

If you hate the idea of paying set-up costs for your broadband service, whether that's a router charge or an activation fee, you can search for broadband deals with no upfront cost with us.

When’s the best time to look for broadband deals with free gifts?

Whatever time of year you look, you'll probably see some providers offering broadband deals with free gifts. There are a couple of seasonal hot spots too.

Although we don't celebrate Thanksgiving here, many UK retailers have seized on the idea of 'Black Friday' (the day after US Thanksgiving) as a time for special deals and promotions. Broadband providers are no exception and you'll often see a flurry of new deals around this time.

The lead-up to Christmas is another good time to look for broadband offers with freebies thrown in. Sometimes the summer holidays are as well.

If you're already out of contract with your broadband, don't hang around for the perfect time of year to bag a deal. The longer you wait, the longer you'll be stuck on whatever default contract your provider moved you to. They're usually poor value and you'll waste more money staying on a pricey tariff for months than you'd gain by bagging a gift voucher.

How do broadband reward cards work?

Broadband reward cards are a way for providers to give you a set amount of spending money as a thank you for signing up.

Providers work with either Mastercard or Visa to supply your broadband reward card because they're essentially debit cards, pre-loaded with a specific amount of money. These days they're usually electronic, not an actual card.

Although the process varies a bit depending on the provider, some bits of the process are the same for everyone.

  • Your provider will wait for your service to be up and running before sending out the reward card, which means waiting until the 'cooling-off period' for your broadband contract is over and you can no longer cancel without penalty
  • You'll have to activate the card online before you can use it to buy things
  • There's usually a time limit to activate it, so don't leave it too long

Only use it to buy something if it's got enough money on it to cover the cost - you usually can't split payment between a broadband reward card and cash or a different card, and you can't have a negative balance

Because your broadband reward card is supplied by either Mastercard or Visa, it will only work with retailers who accept cards from that payment network. Luckily, that's most retailers!

As of June 2025, the Plusnet broadband reward card can be spent pretty much anywhere that accepts Mastercard. Swipe it at the supermarket checkout or use it to buy things online.

The BT broadband reward card can only be used to buy things online or over the phone. It won't work in bricks-and-mortar shops. Like the Plusnet card, it's supplied by Mastercard so you need to make sure the retailer is Mastercard-friendly.

When will my provider send my gift?

These days, the gift cards you get with a broadband contract usually aren't physical cards. It's a lot easier to send you an electronic 'card' that can be scanned directly from your mobile phone. Providers usually send this to your email address, so always:

  • Double-check there are no typos in the address you've given them
  • Make sure you still have access to that email account
  • Check for the gift card and look in your spam folder if it doesn't arrive when it's supposed to

Most providers won't send out your free gift until your broadband service is up and running. So you could have to wait weeks or even months. They should give you an estimated date for when you'll get it. Put this in the calendar and chase them if it doesn't arrive within a day or so of this date.

It's not so common these days for broadband deals to come with a physical item as the free gift, but it does happen sometimes. If you're getting, say, a toaster, they’ll send it to the home address you give them.

Can I get a free TV with a new broadband deal?

You won't usually get an actual TV set as a free gift with any broadband deal. If you're going for a combined TV and broadband package, you're likely to get a set-top box to use with your existing TV.

Sometimes providers offer deals where you pay monthly towards the cost of a new telly rather than having to find a large sum of money upfront.

For example, in summer 2025 Sky has a deal where you pay just £20 upfront and then a smaller sum (starting at £6 a month) for a Sky Glass Air TV. You have to subscribe to Sky TV to qualify for this offer. (Information taken from the Sky website and correct as of June 2025.)

This kind of pay-monthly offer usually isn't a subscription - it's a loan. If you're taking possession of a new TV set without paying in full first, it's almost certainly a credit agreement between you and the provider. They'll run a credit check on you first and if you can't keep up with the payments, it could damage your credit rating.

We're not telling you to avoid these deals. You might decide that this kind of arrangement is the best way for you to spread the cost of a big purchase, especially if it's a 0% loan. We'd just suggest you:

  • Be prepared for your provider to run a credit check on you
  • Check the interest rate on the loan - if it's high, there could be cheaper ways to finance your new telly
  • Check the T&Cs of the loan agreement before signing up so there are no surprises
  • Budget enough to make all the repayments
