Offering fibre optic broadband to homes and businesses throughout the North East, KCOM supplies most of Hull’s residents with fast, reliable internet access.

So, should you bear them in mind when choosing your next broadband provider ?

We take a look at what’s on offer with KCOM broadband deals to see if you can find decent internet at affordable rates where you live.

What is KCOM broadband?

KCOM is currently one of the biggest broadband providers operating in the Hull area.

Back when the Post Office ran the UK’s state-owned broadband network, it seemed inconceivable that an internet giant like BT would take over vast swathes of the country with its Openreach alternative.

Kingston-Upon-Hull remained independent, which means if you live there now, you don’t have access to the usual household names that also use Openreach to deliver their services, including:

For customers living in Hull and East Yorkshire, KCOM is one of the only options for broadband. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as KCOM offers fast, dependable service and plenty of fibre to the premises (FTTP) connections, too.

KCOM broadband packages

All KCOM broadband packages offer unlimited data, meaning you don’t need to worry about your daily usage.

Most KCOM broadband deals come with 24-month contracts, although you might be able to get this shortened depending on your circumstances and if you’re willing to sacrifice some speed.

Despite allowing you to terminate your agreement with them at any time, KCOM may apply Early Termination Charges (ETCs) if you leave whilst still within your existing minimum term.

In this instance, you will be charged for each month remaining on your contract.

KCOM waives ETCs for customers on social tariff broadband, whether you use their standalone voice service or combine it with broadband.

KCOM broadband speeds

KCOM broadband packages currently available offer average download speeds from 30Mbps all the way up to 900Mbps.[1]

However, the actual speed of your broadband will depend on a variety of factors, including where you live and the type of internet connection you have.

Keep this in mind whenever you decide to switch providers, whether it’s to an Openreach company or an area-specific network like KCOM.

Use our broadband speed test to get an idea of how fast your current internet connection is.

KCOM broadband prices

If you’re comparing broadband deals, your final monthly KCOM broadband bill will vary depending on the broadband package you choose and what type of internet connection you have.

For example, an ADSL broadband connection costs more than some fibre packages nowadays because more and more companies are switching to fibre cables as standard.

KCOM broadband setup

It usually takes around two to three weeks for KCOM broadband to activate, and when you place your order, you’ll be asked to pick a date for an engineer to visit your property and install your new broadband.

Having chosen a date for the engineer to visit, you can expect them to:

  • Fit new fibre cables (if needed)
  • Set up your new broadband router
  • Connect one of your devices to check everything is working

Afterwards you should be good to go.

KCOM broadband router

All KCOM broadband deals include their Light Hub 2.0 router, which offers a strong connection throughout your property. Other benefits include:

  • Mesh capable, meaning it integrates well with the latest Smart Wi-Fi technology
  • Higher security with the option to upgrade to WPA 3 encryption
  • Improved antenna quality for further-reaching signal
  • Full fibre compatibility for customers on these plans

KCOM home phone

Pay-As-You-Go calls come as standard with every KCOM broadband plan. This includes monthly line rental.

However, if you use your home phone a lot, consider the following options:

  • UK Landlines - as part of a broadband bundle (incl. line rental plus unlimited calls to UK 01, 02 and 03 numbers, as well as free calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers)
  • UK Landlines + Mobile - as part of a broadband bundle (incl. line rental plus unlimited calls to UK landline and mobile numbers)
  • All Inclusive - as part of a broadband bundle (incl. line rental plus unlimited 24/7 calls to UK numbers [incl. 0845 and 0870])
  • International 1000 - as part of a broadband bundle (incl. line rental plus 1000 minutes of anytime calls to 45 countries [landlines only])

Every KCOM home phone bundle also includes:

  • Free voicemail (1571)
  • Free caller ID, showing you the number of the person who’s calling before you answer
  • The option to have your number removed from the telephone directory

KCOM social broadband

Available in Hull and East Yorkshire, KCOM offers their ‘Flex’ packages as a means of social access.

Currently, this applies to postcodes HU1 through HU17.

KCOM’s Flex packages are only available to customers who receive any of the following:

  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit (not including State Pension)
  • Jobseekers Allowance
  • Housing Benefit
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Attendance Allowance
