How fast is Three broadband?

Three's 5G home broadband has average download speeds of 150Mbps.[2] That's fast enough for a house where everybody wants to stream their shows at the same time. Try our calculator to see what internet speed you need.

How much does Three broadband typically cost?

As of May 2025, it costs £21/month for a 24-month contract with Three. That's for both 4G and 5G broadband. The 24-month plans will cost £23/month from April 2026 and £25/month from April 2027.[2]

For the 5G broadband, there's also the option of a one-month rolling plan at £28/month. Three don't offer this option for 4G.

Three confirmed with us that they don't currently offer a 12-month contract for their home broadband.

As a general rule, no-contract broadband tends to cost more per month - you're paying more for the extra flexibility.

Why choose Three Broadband?

It can be difficult to choose between broadband deals, so here’s everything you need to know at a glance.

Pros Cons
5G speeds - If you can get a good 5G signal in your area, Three promises 5G broadband speeds of around 150Mbps[2] Mobile broadband only - Three only offers mobile broadband packages. In most areas, traditional cabled broadband will give you a faster, more reliable connection
No wires, which means you can use the same broadband service at different addresses Router compatibility – There's a chance you can’t control your router through your device or browser if it’s not supported by Three
Immediate setup - No engineer visit is needed to get you up and running. As soon as your router arrives, you can get online No broadband and phone bundles – Although Three sells both mobile broadband and mobile phone services, it doesn't usually offer bundles combining the two. Its phone bundles are mainly focused on selling a handset alongside the accessories

What is Three 4G broadband and 5G broadband?

Three's 4G and 5G broadband services work exactly like any other type of mobile broadband. They take data signals on the mobile phone network and convert them into WiFi that your laptop, tablet or phone can use.

Three's 4G and 5G broadband falls into two categories:

  • Mobile home broadband to connect the devices in your home
  • MiFi portable broadband for when you're out and about

As with any other kind of mobile broadband, Three's services operate on the two active networks for mobile phones in the UK: 4G and 5G. (The older 2G and 3G networks are being phased out.)

  • 4G broadband is the older network with very high coverage across the UK
  • 5G broadband is the newer, faster network with lower coverage

The Three website has a home broadband coverage checker that will tell you what they can offer at your address. Some addresses can get 5G home broadband, some can get the slower 4G and some can't get any mobile broadband from Three.

The actual signal strength in your home will be different from coverage outside. Use a signal-checker app to test it before you commit.

4G isn't as fast as fixed-line broadband, so if speed is important and you can't get 5G, you'll probably be better off with fibre or cable. There's more info to help you decide on our mobile broadband page.

Can I get Three home broadband without a phone line?

Yes! All Three's services operate on the mobile network. A landline literally isn't even an option. You don't need, and you won't get, any kind of fixed line from Three.

How do I switch to Three broadband?

The easy bit is finding the right Three deal for you (using our handy search) and signing up on the Three website.

Before you do this, check that the minimum term of your existing broadband contract is already up. Otherwise you'll probably have to pay a penalty for leaving early.

When you move to Three, make sure you cancel your contract with your old provider. That step isn't necessary when switching between different fixed-line providers, but it is essential when you switch from fixed-line to mobile broadband.

Alternative providers to Three Broadband

Three is probably the best-known mobile broadband provider in the UK market, although it's not your only option.

The BT Group offers 4G and 5G internet as part of its EE broadband offering. You can also get 4G broadband with BT's own-name BT Broadband service, but only as part of its backup service for customers with the BT Halo add-on.

FAQ

How many devices can you have on Three broadband?

  • Up to 30 devices on Three's 5G home broadband[3]
  • Up to 32 devices on Three's MiFi portable broadband[4]

Is Three customer service good?

Reviews on the independent ratings site Trustpilot suggest not.

As of May 2025, Three's broadband service gets a Trustpilot rating of 1.4 , which is classed as ‘Bad’. The Trustpilot reviews are about the overall experience, so many negative ratings are about connectivity rather than Three's customer service.

A quick look at recent reviews suggests that customer service complaints mostly relate to red tape, billing errors and a refusal to communicate.

Is 5G better than fibre broadband?

Fibre wins on speed and reliability. With fibre broadband, the data travels along a dedicated fibre optic cable (in the form of light signals). This makes it the fastest possible technology we currently have for an internet connection. The very highest speeds in the gigabit broadband category are only possible with a full fibre connection.

5G wins on flexibility. The big advantage of mobile broadband is that it doesn't tie you to one place. Although mobile home broadband routers are too big to carry around on your daily commute, they allow you to get set up in a new place without waiting for installation.

Mobile broadband is a great option if you shuttle between different accommodation - no wonder it's a popular student broadband choice. Mobile broadband also tends to have a bigger choice of low-commitment contracts.

While it isn't capable of the very fastest speeds, 5G can deliver a service that's fast enough for most people's needs. If the 5G coverage is good where you live, it's definitely worth comparing 5G home broadband as well as fixed-line deals.
