What is WightFibre broadband?
WightFibre leads the way when it comes to broadband on the Isle of Wight. This independent provider is committed to building a full fibre network right across the island. 72,000 homes and businesses now have access to the network and they plan to target the harder-to-reach areas next.[2]
WightFibre offer TV and landline services as well as broadband for homes and businesses.
As of June 2025, WightFibre is on the cusp of connecting its 25,000th customer.
WightFibre broadband packages
All WightFibre deals are one-month rolling contracts, so you only need 30 days' notice to cancel. This means no exit fees! There's a variety of speed categories to choose from and you don't need to agonise over the decision - with such low-commitment contracts you can change speeds if you don't pick the right one to start with.
If you're currently on hybrid fibre or an older ADSL connection, you'll need to upgrade to full fibre before you can become a WightFibre customer. If that's possible for your home, the engineer visit is free as part of the WightFibre package.
There are a couple of useful add-ons to your broadband service:
- WightFibre Extender to bounce the WiFi signal further - useful for bigger homes (£1.95/month)
- Whole Home WiFi guarantees a good connection in every room or you get £100 back (£5.95/month)
Prices taken from the WightFibre website and correct as of June 2025.
WightFibre broadband speeds
WightFibre hit a milestone in 2022 when it became the first telecoms company in the UK to switch off its old copper phone lines. (As of June 2025, the project to retire old phone networks is still ongoing in the rest of the UK, led by BT Openreach.) This means that all WightFibre's broadband services run on fibre.
If you're a regular home broadband customer with access to the WightFibre network, these are the speeds available to you:
- 150Mbps
- 300Mbps
- 500Mbps
- 900Mbps
WightFibre told us in June 2025 that 2,042 customers are on their fastest package of 900Mbps.
How does WightFibre work?
WightFibre is an altnet, which means that the company lays and maintains its own cables.
Back in 2001, it was using hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC) cables to deliver its broadband. That's the same tech that Virgin Media uses for what we call 'cable' broadband - in fact, WightFibre ended up being the last cable broadband company in the UK that wasn't part of Virgin. Since then it's pivoted to fibre optic cables as the fastest tech to deliver its broadband service.
The other providers on the Isle of Wight also use fibre, but they don't build or maintain any infrastructure themselves. Like most providers, they use the BT Openreach network.
Why WightFibre is unusual
WightFibre stands out from other providers because its customers get:
- An altnet exclusive to the Isle of Wight
- Some of the most generous speeds for social tariff broadband (100Mbps, equalled only by fellow altnets Hyperoptic and Quickline)
- Symmetrical upload/download speeds (unusual for home broadband) with guaranteed money back if you don't get the advertised speed
- Landline service completely free with your broadband - you only pay for calls
- 30-day contracts, nothing longer
- HomePass feature uses artificial intelligence to manage the use of your home network
How much does WightFibre broadband cost?
Here are the prices for WightFibre's broadband-only offers, correct as of June 2025:
- Full Fibre 150: 150Mbps upload and download speeds, £30.95/month
- Full Fibre 300: 300Mbps upload and download speeds, £31.95/month
- Full Fibre 500: 500Mbps upload and download speeds, £35.95/month
- Full Fibre 900: 900Mbps upload and download speeds, £39.95/month
There are no upfront fees like activation charges or paying for your router.
WightFibre broadband reviews
As of 12 June 2025, WightFibre has a rating of 4.6 stars out of 5 on the independent review site Trustpilot. One recent review describes the excitement of going from speeds of around 10Mbps to '21st century access' thanks to WightFibre.
Does WightFibre have a broadband social tariff?
WightFibre offers a social tariff called Full Fibre 100 Essential Broadband. Like most social tariff broadband, you have to be on specific means-tested benefits to qualify. These are:
- Income-based Employment and Support Allowance
- Income-based Jobseekers' Allowance
- Income Support
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
Can I get WightFibre broadband in my area?
WightFibre only serves the Isle of Wight, so you can't get broadband from them if you live anywhere else.
A WightFibre press release from June 2024 boasts of 80% coverage from the company's full fibre network. Given that work developing the network has been going well since then, we'd estimate it's a significantly higher percentage now.
You're more likely to be in that fortunate majority if you're in a relatively densely populated part of the island. Cowes and Newport have high coverage, but it's not so good in rural areas. This is changing fast, though, not least because WightFibre is receiving public funding to connect hard-to-reach areas.
The best way to find out if it’s operating in your part of the island is to put your postcode into our address checker at the top of the page and run a search.
Alternative broadband deals
WightFibre is exclusively available on the Isle of Wight - nowhere else. You can't become a customer if you're on the mainland. If that's disappointing news and you want to find a good alternative, here’s how you can find an alternative that offers similar advantages.
Do you want short, low-commitment contracts? Look for a short-term or no contract broadband deal with another provider.
Do you want symmetrical upload/download speeds? You're more likely to get these with business broadband than a residential internet package. If you're looking for a domestic deal with symmetrical speeds then check to see what Virgin Media is offering in your area.
Do you want a provider that has high customer satisfaction ratings? When you're comparing all your available deals with us, do a bit of extra research. Before you go with a provider, use Trustpilot or another independent review site to check what existing customers think.
Do you want a provider that builds its own infrastructure? There are independent providers in other parts of the UK, too. Use the address checker on our altnets page to see if any of them serve your area.
Do you want a provider that doesn't charge upfront fees? Plenty of other providers offer broadband deals with no upfront charges (such as installation fees or router costs).
How to compare WightFibre broadband deals
If you're trying to decide which WightFibre broadband offer to go for, your first step is to pick the right speed category from the five available. Our guide to what broadband speed you need should help. As we've mentioned, there's no need to sweat this decision because the contracts are only a month long.
Once you've chosen your speed category, think about what extras you'd like to add.
- Netgem TV offers all the Freeview channels plus some streaming services for £5.95/month
There's a choice of call packages for your WightFibre landline, starting at £5/month for evening and weekend calls.
FAQs
Is there a WightFibre speed guarantee?
Yes! WightFibre claims to be the only broadband provider on the UK market with a guarantee for both upload and download speeds. If it can't give you the speeds advertised, WightFibre will give you £100.
The WightFibre T&Cs state that the guaranteed speed is measured as an average of speed test results over 30 days. So a one-off period of slower internet wouldn't trigger the guarantee unless it was persistent enough to bring down the monthly average.
Speed is only measured when your router is connected to the internet. The guarantee doesn't apply during a power cut or internet outage.
It applies to the following speed categories:
- 100Mbps
- 150Mbps
- 300Mbps
- 500Mbps
- 900Mbps
To claim your £100 through the WightFibre Speed Guarantee, you need to:
- Always use the router that WightFibre provides for the package you're on
- Let them know there's a problem with your speed by ringing 01983 242424
- Work with them to resolve the problem and allow 30 days for them to fix it
If you've done all that and they still can't deliver the speed promised, WightFibre will give you £100. There's also the option to reject the money and leave your contract without penalty, but there's not much point to this when the contracts are so short.
Who owns WightFibre?
WightFibre was acquired by Infracapital in 2017. That's part of global financial giant M&G Investments. Infracapital is the part of M&G that focuses on investing in infrastructure - like fibre networks.
The UK government has invested heavily in WightFibre. There's a pot of money called the Digital Infrastructure Investment Partners' Fund (DIIP) which is funded by the government and managed by Infracapital in collaboration with merchant bankers Cameron Barney.
WightFibre was the first UK business to get money from the DIIP fund. The government allocated this money in 2017 for WightFibre to expand the coverage of its fibre network to over 50,000 homes and businesses.
This target has now been exceeded. When we spoke to WightFibre in June 2025, a spokesperson told us: "We can now service 72,000 homes and businesses on the Isle of Wight and aim to add the very rural and hard to reach properties by the end of 2027."
WightFibre has received additional government subsidies through the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme.
How long does it take to install WightFibre?
When we spoke to WightFibre in June 2025, they told us that there's typically a three-week wait for fibre installation because of high demand.
If you need installation more urgently than that, they will try to help if they can. You can go on their waiting list to be slotted in sooner if there's a cancellation.
The actual installation involves drilling a hole in a wall and fitting a fibre optic cable through. Providers usually give you a half-day time slot for this. The actual job will probably be quicker than that unless there's something to complicate it, like access issues. Always make sure someone is home for the full time slot you're given.
